Virus Demographics – Who’s Getting Infected

Have you ever wondered why viruses spread the way they do? Although the answer may seem quite simple, we wanted to know “who” spreads them. Not the people who create them – We wanted instead, to see if we build a profile of the typical virus victim

After all, it’s the victim who helps facilitate the widespread prevalence of viruses — inadvertently as that help may be. Our research told us some pretty interesting facts that just may surprise even you.

The Most Common Computer Virus Victim

Now the data we manifested isn’t 100% conclusive, but so far, it seems that that the most common computer virus victim (or spreader in our case) is the young or new employee who works on an unprotected networked PC.

Apparently these workers use their desktops for non-work related activities (gaming, chatting, visiting adult websites) without regard for company policy, and they unintentionally download harmful code. Because the websites that they visit install dormant viruses and/or spyware, no one is the wiser until everyone’s computer starts to act differently.

It’s unfortunate, but by that time, the code has made its way to the network’s main server — ultimately compromising the function of every computer connected to it, and possibly sending back sensitive information to whoever wrote the code.

The Home Computer User

The second most common victim is the home computer user. Users in this category seem to suffer from the effects of spyware and adware more than the effects of a virus. There’s still much to be done, but if we look hard enough, we’ll surely find hundreds of supportive examples. Subscribe to our newsletter where we’ll continue to report our findings.
