Google Analytics Unique Visitor Tracking

Google Analytics Unique Visitor Tracking

Our Introduction to Web Traffic Analysis Reports article points to valuable information as well.

The Unique Visitor Tracking section is divided into six main sections: Daily Visitors, Visits & Pageview Tracking, Goal Conversion Tracking, Absolute Unique Visitors, Visitor Loyalty, and Visitor Recency. Each section helps you understand the value in tracking your visitors, and when to improve that value. Here, we explain these sections in ‘easy-speak.’

Daily Visitors

The Daily Visitors Report reveals how many people come to your website on a daily basis over a specified amount of time (dates). It also shows what percent of the people are new visitors. Having this information will enable you to monitor the number of visitors your website attracts and if necessary, make site adjustments to increase that number.

Visits & Pageview Tracking

The Visits & Pageview Tracking Report first – shows the number of daily visits your website receives, second – shows how many pageviews your site gets, and then third – calculates the average number of pageviews that occur from each visit. Having this information will enable you to monitor the number of pages that each of your visitors view and if necessary, make site adjustments to improve that number. By setting a date range, you can see how these numbers change over a specified period of time.

Goal Conversion Tracking

Remembering that Google Analytics focuses on your marketing efforts rather than mere site facts, you can take advantage of its ability to define goals and ultimately, help you achieve them. The Goal Conversion Tracking Report calculates how many of your visitors play active roles in your ability to meet each one of your goals.

A visitor who interacts with your website achieves a goal (by subscribing to your newsletter, for example) and thus, creates a conversion. Having this information will enable you to monitor your goal achievements and if necessary, make site adjustments to increase them. By setting a date range, you can see how your numbers change over a specified period of time.

Absolute Unique Visitors

It may be difficult for some traffic analysis programs to discern different types of visitors, but it’s not difficult for Google Analytics. The Absolute Unique Visitor Report quickly paints a picture of the number of your website’s new visitors (compared to returning visitors) during a specified date range. Having this information will enable you to monitor your website’s ability to attract new visitors and if necessary, make site adjustments to improve that ability.

Visitor Loyalty

The Visitor Loyalty Report confirms the number of visitors who return to your website within a determined date range. As a bar graph, this report counts the number of visitors and tallies them by the number of visits they make. The higher the number, the more loyal your visitors are. Having this information will enable you to identify loyal visitors and if necessary, make site adjustments to increase them.

Visitor Recency

In addition to calculating how many visitors return to your website, Google Analytics also measures the time between their visits. The longer the time between visits – the longer the bar graph. To further simplify things, Google Analytics categorizes your visitors according to the number of days that have elapsed since their last visit. Having this information will enable you to monitor the number of visitor absences and if necessary, make site adjustments to reduce them. A date range can tailor the Visitor Recency Report to your preference.
