Phonics Success From the Beginning
In our article entitled, “Key Phonics Enemies,” we discussed what can be detrimental to an effective phonics software program. In this article, we address what can enable an effective phonics software program.
Seriousness
We recommend that you reinforce the importance of reading at every opportunity. Students – even young, emerging readers — must take their phonics software lessons seriously since the consequences of not doing so are too severe. Our article entitled, “The Importance Of Literacy” introduces some of those consequences, but they aren’t adequately described in text form.
The truth is that failing to learn how to read has emotional consequences that none of us who are literate could sufficiently imagine. The non-reader – in either childhood or adulthood – is prone to suffer from depression, low self-esteem, and anti-social behavior based on the simple fact that he cannot participate in all of the activities that his peers participate in. Not at the same level! And not with the same proficiency.
Dedication
Stressing the importance of dedication is just as important. Phonics isn’t short and it isn’t easy. To be effective, students must complete the program from start to finish since so many of its lessons are extensions of past lessons learned. As an example, Randy’s Reading Program contains over 100 distinct lessons that are crucial to reading the English language.
Only through completing the program’s last lesson will children have the skills to read everything in print. And only through completing the program’s last lesson will children be able to expand their own limited horizons with the thoughts and ideas of others expressed through written form. A sufficient reading level is simply not possible at the program’s half point or through sporadic use.
Organization
The very nature of phonics necessitates an ordered learning process. That’s why Randy’s Reading Program is careful to introduce crucial lessons at crucial times. We emphasize key letter sound relationships first, and then we demonstrate the value of learning those relationships within increasingly complex words.
Attempting to learn phonics any other way would be like attempting to run before learning to walk. We believe that our ordinal approach to teaching phonics emphasizes the ordinal approach to learning phonics itself and helps develop the systematic style of deciphering words that students need to successfully read.
Is seriousness, dedication, and organization sufficient to sustain a successful phonics software program alone? Our article entitled, “Creating an Appropriate Phonics Environment” introduces additional tips on what makes reading a success, however we’re pretty confident that a solid combination of ALL of our suggestions will be sufficient as along as they’re approached with the tenacity described above.
