Re: So what are the 3 most important things in a client?

I'll bite.

1. Decent wages. If a business advertised for teenagers, let alone adults, to work at semi-skilled jobs like restaurant staff or shop assistants and announced the pay would be $3 an hour, there would be a huge reaction. Unions would respond, workers and parents would be outraged and there could even be local laws which made such employment illegal. Yet this is exactly what some clients offer. They run ads for work where the pay is disgraceful.

2. STOP asking for spec work as part of the bidding process. This has rip-off written all over it. The buyer gets dozens of samples from hopeful coders, keeps the samples and gives only one coder the job or maybe no coder. This is obtaining free material. This is exploitation. Simple solution. Make the solicitation of samples as part of the bid illegal.

3. Be clear. Beauty may in the eye of the beholder but when a buyer asks for something such as “a balanced article” the coder may never win. What does ‘balanced’ mean? If the buyer neglects to advise the coder that the product being reviewed is actually a sponsor of their web page, then a clear conflict of interest exists.

Mutual respect – I want to be respected for my expertise. Don't treat me like an idiot or talk down to me like an indentured servant.

Prompt payment – Pay me when you say you will, just as I will deliver when I say that I will.

Easy to work with – I want people that I can work with and enjoy working with. If I wanted someone on my case every 5 minutes, I'd still be working for someone else.
