Outsourcing Contractor (Book Excerpts)

If you haven’t already, register a username for yourself so you can discuss this topic in our Book Discussion forum.

Curious about outsourcing the contractor? Our book, “Outsourcing Through RentACoder” explains it all. Below are a few selected snippets that describe its importance and why you, as an outsourcer, should care.

For details, head on over to this page and order the book. Outsourcing Through RentACoder is a 418 page step-by-step user guide for entrepreneurs who want to reduce their workload and increase productivity at the same time.

Excerpts:

  • Working as a RentACoder contractor, we find our clients range from the single entrepreneur to the 10 – 100 people-sized business, which only exemplifies the rapid growth of online outsourcing. (page 15)
  • In Meet the RentACoder Brainiacs, we familiarize you with all of RentACoder’s staff members one by one. Then we introduce you to the site’s independent contractors. (page 24)
  • Although it’s best for both you and your contractor to remain professional, it never hurts to at least understand your contractor‘s perspective. (page 30)
  • Through RentACoder, coders essentially bid on a job and buyers select a coder based on specific criteria – similar to the way independent contractors bid on a construction job of some sort and companies hire one based on the same standards. (page 40)
  • Normally, RentACoder contractors have their own code of ethics to follow, however if your business requires tasks or behaviors that are unusual or atypical, you might have to reconsider what you’re outsourcing and why you’re outsourcing it. (page 53)
  • Domestic outsourcing is when both an outsourcing company and its independent contractor(s) are located in the same country. (page 61)
  • In less than a decade, what started out as a one-manned crusade generated almost 800,000 outsourcing opportunities and millions of dollars in transactions throughout the entire process. Global IT continues to be a routine part of business for thousands of buyers and contractors every day through this very resource. (page 73)
  • Sometimes a business will ask a contractor to perform extra tasks while a job is already in progress – tasks that were not included in the outsourcing contract. (page 85)
  • The best back up plan you can have is a simple list of alternative RentACoder contractors. (page 92)
  • Another set of risks are those associated with selecting a RentACoder contractor. The skill set of coders are wide and varied. (page 100)
  • RentACoder’s Expert Guarantee protection brings committed and capable coders to the forefront with a coder-initiated deposit. I.E., a RentACoder contractor who wishes to demonstrate his/her dedication and skills prior to winning a contract will deposit a percentage of a project’s maximum bid (proposed cost). (page 117)
  • An outsourcing team is comprised of a leader (you) who maintains contact among the head honcho (the boss) and selected RentACoder contractor(s). (page 129)
  • What often results is inferior workmanship (due to being overburdened) and a bad feeling about outsourcing when a contractor can’t keep up with the demands. (page 130)
  • You’re going to have to be much more specific when itemizing your own project’s tasks because when it’s all said and done, you’ll have what’s called, a “scope.” And hired contractors will use your scope as the basis of their work performance. (page 142)
  • Without this documentation, the IRS will want to know why you aren’t treating your contractor like an employee. (page 152)
  • The non-compete agreement typically describes who the contractor is, what services are provided, and a statement that confirms a non-competitive relationship. (page 160)
  • The Open Auction – one of RentACoder’s most commonly used auctions — is a bid request that solicits bids from all of RentACoder’s contractors. (page 174)

  1. AllTheBestLines:

just out of curiosity- what is the size of your client-base? (in case you are hired for long term work)?

    • JOsourcing:

AllTheBestLines (cute name), my client size ranges from project-to-project. It's hard to know for sure since I typically communicate with just one person who might be an entrepreneur, or work on behalf a large company. I (really) usually don't know unless I ask — and I usually don't ask unless that information is needed to complete a project.

Second, long term work is not a problem for me or any of my team members, though we each have a limit. If we're unable to take on additional work, we're sure to let our clients know.
