Top Tips for Building an E-Commerce Website

It’s easier than ever to get started in the world of e-commerce. Anyone with a computer and an internet connection can throw up a website and reach a huge audience. However, it takes more than a website, a product, and an ecommerce fulfillment agreement to make a successful business. If you can’t stand out from the competition, then you won’t get any customers. To move your business on to the next level, you will need either a major investment (difficult with banks being so cautious) or a plan to outsource key operations.

Competition is stiff in the world of e-Commerce, and it’s difficult to stand out from the crowd of sites in even the smallest of niches. Hopefully, these tips will help you to build a successful site.

1. Focus your message: There’s no point setting up a site that sells plush toys, boxing gloves, and video games. You can’t compete with department stores. Pick one niche, and focus on it. Build a site that will appeal to people who are interested in that niche, and try to build a reputation for quality and value within that niche.

2. Do one site at a time: If you want to sell a wide variety of products, then build different sites for each niche – but do them one at a time. Get one site off the ground, and get it ticking over with a steady stream of orders before you move on to the next site. Trying to grow too many projects at once will probably lead to none of the sites achieving their true potential

3. Find a reliable mailing fulfillment company: Slow shipping, damaged goods, and mixed up orders will destroy your reputation. If you’re relying on a drop shipper or an ecommerce fulfillment company, make sure they have a good reputation. Don’t open your shop until you’ve found a reliable company to deliver your products.

4. Put your customers first: Make it easy for your customers to get help. Offer several ways for them to contact you, and provide them with plenty of information about what’s happening with their order. That way, if things go wrong, your customers will know that you’re working as hard as you can to put things right. Good communication breeds goodwill among your customers.

5. Make it easy to return products: The distance selling regulations dictate that buyers need to be able to return products if they aren’t happy with them for any reason. Make sure that it’s easy for your customers to return products if they need to. Hopefully, your returns service won’t be used too often, but just by making it easily available you’ll make customers feel safer.

Small ecommerce ventures can be handled in-house, but if you want your website to be a major source of income then you should treat it like a serious business, and make sure that you have a good support service and ecommerce fulfillment system in place. Outsourcing support, returns, and mailing fulfillment doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and the added assurance of having a reliable supply chain in place will go a long way towards allowing your company to grow to the next level.
