What to Expect

Via OOH: The duties of bill and account collectors are similar across the many different organizations in which they work. First, they locate and notify consumers or businesses with delinquent accounts. Once they find debtors, they inform them of the overdue accounts and solicit payment. When necessary, they review terms of sale, or credit contracts, learn the cause of delinquencies, offer repayment plans, or refer customers to debt counselors. In more extreme cases, they may initiate repossession proceedings, or hand the account over to an attorney for legal action.

What to Pay

The collector with an impressive portfolio of work should earn about $15.91 an hour1.  That’s an hourly savings of $4.82 compared to the collector who is hired as a full-time employee with benefits2.

1Based on 2010 national estimates for this occupation (via U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.)
2Based on a total compensation cost of 30.3% (via EBRI.)
