The Bad, Worse, and Worst Newsletter Ever

Newsletters are a great way to keep customers informed of current events. They also help garner new and repeat business. Unfortunately, there are a number of companies that produce very poor newsletters which do more damage than good. When newsletters are produced by staff members who don’t have appropriate design experience, the end result is often detrimental.

The Bad

A particularly bad newsletter that I’ve seen was published by a local auto care facility. This monthly newsletter offered various tips and car care suggestions. The overall design and printing quality of the newsletter relatively well done. But the context and the amount of information was random and simply overwhelming. Even with a decent design, content must follow some logical organization.

Even Worse

An even worse newsletter was from a local fitness center. There was very little information in this newsletter, and some of its items seemed as though they were inserted just to take up space. The newsletter’s accompanying pictures and overall formatting was rather jarring as well. It simply looked like a bunch of articles and graphics thrown wherever they would fit.

The Worst Newsletter, Ever

The worst newsletter I’ve seen was produced by a local church. Its paper was an extremely bright shade of yellow, its formatting and layouts were awkward, and there were spelling mistakes sprinkled throughout. The newsletter’s header looked fuzzy as though it were photocopied onto the document. Embarrassing!

Easier and More Economical Can Backfire

True, it’s often easier and more economical to produce a newsletter in-house rather than hiring a professional design company to do the work. The problem is that "easier and more economical" can backfire if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Current events can be found in our Newsletter Design News section.

If you insist, you must cleanly format and organize your articles, print the newsletter on tasteful and professional paper, and make sure your header and graphics are crisp. Just these few things can contribute to a successful marketing tool.
