Having determined your in-house resources aren’t adequate enough to effectively communicate your company’s products and/or services, you need a freelance writer. But what do you require? And how do you communicate those requirements to prospective freelance writers?
Just as your employees manufacture high-quality products, your hired freelance writer must manufacture the same in literature. You simply cannot have low-quality writing sit aside products advertised as first-class, first-rate, or outstanding. That creates a confusing and contradictory presentation. So here are 3 things you can demand to ensure your writing is up to par.
Stress Excellent Grammar
Correct punctuation and word usage are a must. High quality writing cannot lack these basic elements because educated consumers demand them. They’ll even go so far as to judge your company’s credibility based on your use of them. Consider the following:
“Here at ACME weve created quality products and there heads and shoulders above the competition.” That may read well enough, but it’s grammatically offensive and a real turn-off to the savvy consumer. No one will hand over their credit card number to a website riddled with text like that.
Require Structure and Coherency
The same applies to sentence structure, paragraphs, and content logic. An article’s introduction must state its purpose and supporting material. It’s conclusion must reiterate the main points of the article and convince the reader to perform an action. The consequences of not doing so can be costly — especially on an ecommerce website.
Dictate the Necessary Style
Dry writing, no matter how well structured, just doesn’t convert as well as styled writing. Styled writing creates a lasting impression whereas dry writing is quickly disregarded. The problem with getting styled writing from some freelance writers is that they’re often inundated with work and have neither the desire nor energy to produce creative copy.
Fortunately, there are two easy solutions: (1) vet high-quality freelance writers with light workloads, and (2) ignore bids from writers who claim they can write quality material within 30 minutes or less. As a writer myself, I can attest that latter claim is ridiculous. Quality writing doesn’t spring from 30 minute typing sprees. Rough drafts and brainstorms do — and you certainly don’t want those siting next to your products.
Opt for the experienced, realistic (and non-overworked) freelancer writer instead so you’ll receive deliverables that you won’t hesitate to publish.
