Paid advertising (banner advertising, PPC, etc.) comes in at second place, while purchased traffic ranks third.1 The least preferred methods of attracting site traffic are SEM (search engine marketing) and distribution through freebie channels.
If you’re surprised, check out this set of search results which confirm what the poll above suggests. Then take a look at your own web stats to see where the bulk of your traffic comes from. If you don’t see the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Digg, or StumbleUpon listed, you’re not taking advantage of what has apparently become the de facto method of deliverance.
