Search Engines vs. Directories

If you haven’t already, register a username for yourself so you can discuss this topic in our Search Engine Marketing forum.

We’re all familiar with search engines like Yahoo, Google, AOL Search, and more. They’re usually the first things we hit when we go searching for information. But there’s another tool that some of us use to find information – the Internet directory. An Internet directory is similar to a search engine, except instead of indexing a billion unrelated websites, an Internet directory typically specializes in a specific topic.

For example, you could find links to information about pencil sharpeners or perfume bottles in a search engine, but you wouldn’t find any of these links in an Internet directory that only points to medical websites. Search engines basically point to everything whereas Internet directories point to specific interests.

Search Engines and Directories

Submitting a website to search engines and Internet directories is a simple process of telling these places where your website is and what it’s all about. To maximize your exposure, and to make sure people can find you in either one of these places, you need to submit your website to both. So often, people concentrate on search engine submission only, they forget about the value of Internet directories!

Don’t do the same. Be smart and remember that hundreds of thousands of people use Internet directories to find information. Then submit your website to these directories too.

Popular Search Engines

Since you don’t want to make this job any harder than it has to be (and it can be a whopper!), head on over to the Submit Free (http://www.ineedhits.com/free-tools/submit-free.aspx) website, create a free account, and submit your website to 20 popular search engines at no cost. This nifty service will send our website information to engines such as:

•    Jayde
•    Exactseek
•    Burf
•    Search-O-Rama
•    Cipinet
•    InfoTiger
•    Mixcat
•    Abacho
•    Igwanna
•    Beamed
•    G7K Marketing
•    TowerSearch
•    SearchAve
•    Aesop
•    FreeEmail123
•    Amfibi
•    WebSquash
•     SearchEngine
•    Find Once
•    Search-The-World

We particularly like this service because we only have to fill out a form one time, and provide information that describes our website’s name, URL (web address), and description. When we’ve finished with that, the service lets us click a short series of buttons until our website has been submitted to every search engine in the list!

Check out our Submit2Search program – a tiny Google Chrome extension that makes submitting an individual webpage to Google’s search engine easier and faster.

Deemed as one of the most important search engines of all, Google is a resource you don’t want to exclude from your submission adventure. Add your website’s URL through this easy form: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

Yahoo is also a force to be reckoned with, but be prepared to pay for inclusion! http://www.yahoo.com Current events can be found in our Search and Directory Site Submission News section.
