| If you’ve heard about outsourcing through oDesk, but aren’t sure if it’s the best choice, take a look at this. |
Here, we compare oDesk to RentACoder (now vWorker) on some some of the most important points to the online outsourcer, so you can see how both oDesk and vWorker stack up against not only each other, but against what you need as an outsourcer as well.
Ratings
Odesk lets its workers hide bad comments which doesn’t contribute to an honest ratings system. It’s very important for buyers to know a worker’s ratings and feedback reflect that worker’s true working habits. When a worker hides less-than-favorable ratings, buyers can be easily duped into hiring a poor worker. At vWorker, no rating may be hidden under any circumstance.
Escrowing
oDesk does not require escrow for fixed-fee projects, whereas vWorker protects your money with escrowing on all job types – hourly and fixed. oDesk does, however, charge a $10 payment verification fee, whereas vWorker does not.
Money Back Guarantee

Current events can be found in our oDesk News section. |
oDesk doesn’t guarantee hourly work, nor does it refund you if your worker misses a required status report the way vWorker does. vWorker guarantees both hourly and fixed-fee work with free arbitration and in some cases, an Expert Guarantee.
Source Code Protection
oDesk doesn’t offer source-code protection, but vWorker allows you to require all workers who bid on your project to be Chaperon enabled. Chaperon makes it virtually impossible for a worker to copy or pirate your source code by protecting it from creation and transport to storage and retrieval. See the vWorker website for more information regarding Chaperon.
Arbitration
oDesk’s arbitration for hourly work is not based on quality of work, but on whether or not a worker committed fraud, based on screenshots and not an analysis of deliverables. As a result, you could end up paying for work that isn’t satisfactory.

vWorker offers arbitration on all projects free of charge, and it tests deliverables to make sure they meet requirements. You can read how vWorker’s arbitrators make their decisions on its website.
Selection of Workers
oDesk doesn’t let you limit bidding to certified, qualified workers only. At vWorker, you can search for and hire workers with specific qualifications.
